Common poets society
Our friends at the Common Poets Society run a monthly open mic at Common Room Bar. It's a warm, friendly atmosphere, led by our Hawke's Bay producer Rosheen FitzGerald. You can check out dates and times by following Motif or the Common Poets Society on Facebook.
Hawke's bay poetry slam
Every year we run Hawke's Bay's regional poetry slam competition. Local poets battle it out for the title of Slam Champion. The winner of this event each year is invited to compete at the New Zealand Poetry Slam national competition. As always this is a supportive and friendly event that anyone is welcome to take part in. More information can be found here, but always check out our social media for the most up to date details.
In 2023 for the first time the Common Poets Society is running heats and the regional final. Check out our social media and stay tuned for details. You can see past Hawke's Bay Poetry Slam Champions here.

poetry showcase
The best way to connect with poets and poetry is in a close, warm, expertly curated showcase. We host national and international touring poets who want to share their work in Hawke's Bay. We've run Pride events in Hastings, featured award winning poets in Napier, and run school performances in Wairoa and Flaxmere.

Are you harbouring a crush on spoken word? Maybe you write, maybe you want to write, maybe you just get on the YouTube – either way, this class will be a safe and creative space for you to express your own stories. With the international spoken word scene expanding like a soufflé, the poetic communities of Aotearoa are going from strength to strength. Using a range of poetic forms, we will reach across communities and between disciplines to find the voices of our young storytellers – voices that are authentic, silly and critical.
