Poetry in Motion is an inclusive group which aims to raise the profile of spoken word as a meaningful, fun and entertaining art form and challenge people's notions of what poetry is and can be.
Poetry in Motion holds monthly spoken word evenings at 7:30pm on the first Thursday of the month at Fringe Bar on Allen Street, with both local and touring feature poets. We always start with an Open Mic and we'd love to hear your poetry. Keep an eye on our facebook page for upcoming events. |
History

Poetry in Motion Wellington saw its beginnings in August 2011 with a pilot show featuring two slam poets from America, Ken Arkind and Carrie Rudzinski. Local poet Ali Jacs pulled together a few others to perform at an event with the two travelling poets and a seed was planted.
PIM started hosting regular shows at Heaven Woodfire Pizza on Upper Cuba Street in March 2012. With a cozy fire to keep us warm on those windy Wellington winter nights, we soon grew and moved inside to take over the whole cafe. Then in 2014, searching for a larger venue, we found a new home at Meow on Edward Street. We had our last regular event at Meow in May of 2018, and are now doing the first Thursday of each month at Fringe Bar on Allen Street.
Featuring local, national and international poets, alongside open mic sessions, poetry slams and themed poetry evenings (such as our legendary haiku deathmatch), PiM is a mainstay of performance poetry in the capital. We love to see new people participate, so come check us out and share some of your work.

Team
- The last remaining founding member, Travis Cottreau is an IT/technical guy who found a creative outlet in poetry when randomly arriving at Poetry in Motion's first ever event at Happy Bar in 2011. Blown away by the experience, he began performing at and now running PIM's monthly events. Short poetry suits his attention span, and he was runner up in Poetry in Motion's 2012 Haiku Death Match and then the winner in 2013. He was also runner up at PIM's only Limerick Death Match in 2013.

Likes: animals, messing with audiences
Dislikes: fascism disguised as fiscal conservatism, fascism disguised as nationalism, fascism disguised as libertarianism, and just plain old Brian Tamaki fascism.

xoxo - Kate Spencer recently escaped the corporate cage to live the life of a starving artist and she's loving it! Poet, performer, writer, editor, photographer - you name it, she does it. Check out her website www.creatifkate.com and hire her: you know you want to.
- Michael Howard enjoys spending time muttering similar sounding words over a beer. Sometimes he does this in front of a microphone. In addition, he's also rather fond of watching others do the same.
