Money can be difficult to navigate.
Some people would never question a builder's fee, but never think to pay an artist. This is not ok. You'll hear cliches like 'It'll be good exposure' or 'But you love it, why wouldn't you do it for free'. We know these are silly things to say.
Here is a VERY rough and brief guide to different kinds of events that you might come across. Get in touch if you'd like any specific advice.

A rough guide
Good
Paid appropriately for time, effort and preparation ✅
Unpaid for a good cause, eg charity, important that if you're not getting paid, no one else is either ✅
Unpaid open mic, experimental, a space to try things out ie. you don't have to be good ✅
Koha events, shared profits between everyone based on how many ticket sales you get ✅
Doing it as a favour for a close friend, knowing that they'll help you move next month ✅
Difficult
Underpaid 😡
This can be really hard to navigate, we can offer advice on this if you think someone is taking advantage
Bad
Unpaid ❌
If it's a meaningful booking, then this is not ok. Again, we're happy to offer advice.
