A Poetry Slam is a competitive poetry event where poets compete for points. Five random audience members are tasked with being the judges and they score each poem out of 10 to one decimal place.
The number of poets involved and number of rounds can change event-to-event, but there are some universal rules – no props, no costumes, poems must be three minutes or less, poets must read original work, and no punching down or hate speech.

Motif Poetry's July Windswept Slam will be the Pōneke Wellington Poetry Slam Heat #1
The 2024 Windswept Slams will be held at the Aro Valley Community Centre – a physically accessible venue! The top three performance poets from each of this year's four heats will hurtle into the Pōneke Wellington Poetry Slam Champs!

Pick one heat to compete in and one back up heat, in case the other is full. There are twelve spots per heat.
Email amy@motifpoetry.co.nz with your picks, including Poety In Motion slams.
All heats will be two round poetry slams with no knockouts.
Bring two poems max. 3 minutes each.
✅ YES, bring poems you have written.
✅ YES, feel free to read poems off a phone or paper.
❌ NO, you can't use props or costume.
❌ NO, you can't use backing music or dancers.
❌ NO, we won't tolerate hate speech.
The top three poets from each heat will go through to the Pōneke Wellington Poetry Slam Champs at the National Library of New Zealand in October 2024.
Poets, please remember the 'judges' will be random members of the audience. And, although poems are scored don't take any notice of those silly numbers. Slams are a sneaky way to get the general public engaged in poetry and for us to share our work!
